Gates

Why are gates so prevalent in Vietnam, not just the Confucian Temple of Literature?

Also, in front of Buddhist shrines, such as the one below, an anonymous small temple passed on the road, profiled in the chapter "A Peek in a Buddhist Shrine" in a later chapter.

In front of Cham temples, such as Pone Gar in Nha Trang,

Entry to Tu Duc's royal Tomb complex outside Hue,

Entry gate to a huge new tourist shrine attraction passed on the road,

The banner is one we saw everywhere.
Chuc Mung Nam Moi
"Happy (Lunar) New Year"

And, entrance to a small local temple complex in the countryside of Ninh Binh province?
