August 1: National Holiday in Switzerland

August 1 is the celebration of the original pact in 1291 between the first three cantons of Switzerland. They swore allegiance at Ruetli to band together and escape the onerous taxation and domination by the Hapsburg Empire. The day is celebrated by children, soldiers in parades, people in campgrounds - and many firecrackers.

Going by bike from Lucerne south, we passed this little Swiss forest man.
Pilatus mountain shows the profile of a man to the left and Greta Garbo (facing right).
