Courtauld Institute of Art

Less visited, the Courtauld is in the sprawling Suffolk House complex.  Although the Courtauld collection is large and wide-ranging, these are all British and all were painted during times of war.  The first painting was done by a Netherlandish artist of an English officer standing naked amidst a naval battle with his arm restrained by a woman holding an olive branch.  The portrait of Gainsborough's wife Margaret is an arresting, magnetic and somber image.

Hans Eworth.  Allegorical Portrait of John Luttrell, 1550.

Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788).  Portrait of Margaret Gainsborough, 1778.

Vanessa Bell (1879-1961).  A Conversation, 1914.

Ivon Hitchens (1893-1979).  Balcony View, Iping Church, 1943.
