Kirchner and Swiss Mountains

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner was German but after fighting in World War I moved to Davos Switzerland.  His landscapes from Davos are populated by mountains and neighbors.

Color woodcut: Weather Firs.  1919.

Oil on canvas.  Ascending the Alps.  1918/1918.

Woodcut.  Three Paths, Stafelalp.  1917.

Mountains appear in the art of many Swiss artists, and artists who came there.

The Matterhorn, below, by Gabriel Loppé of the Matterhorn, 1867.  Two hikers are barely visible by the rocks above the crevasse.

One of the great Swiss artists, Ferdinand Hodler: The Jungfrau from Mürren.  1911.
