Less visited, the Courtauld is in the sprawling Suffolk House complex. Although the Courtauld collection is large and wide-ranging, these are all British and all were painted during times of war. The first painting was done by a Netherlandish artist of an English officer standing naked amidst a naval battle with his arm restrained by a woman holding an olive branch. The portrait of Gainsborough's wife Margaret is an arresting, magnetic and somber image.
