Built between 1925 and 1930 by architects Brinkman and Van der Vlucht, the factory's design was revolutionary in many ways. Besides optimum functioning of the factory, great emphasis was placed on providing improved working conditions for employees.
Since Van Nelly's departure in 1995, the building has been restored and begun a new life as Van Nelle Design Factory. The restoration endeavored to maintain the transparency of the factory floors by installing the new facades required for climate control on the inside. On the upper floors offices of various sizes were created for the creative sector. The ground floor is for exhibitions and conferences. In 2014 the Van Nelle Factory was added to UNESCO's World Heritage List.
