This is what the Rhine looks like now, above - it is a large canal in many places. The map below shows what the Rhine channel originally looked like before major engineering in the 1800's.
The diagram below shows how there are a series of dams every 10 kilometers or so. They are largely operated by the French energy department EDF and many have hydroelectric turbines.
This mural, although hard to see, depicts water maidens cavorting with hydroelectric turbines. Rhine maidens indeed - maybe Wagner was onto something...
