Tribes had different territories and distinctive customs.
The Oneida or Onyotaaka, People of the Standing Stone, were centered on Rome, NY, called De O Wain Sta, The Great Carrying Place. This was the watershed between waters flowing east and south to the Hudson River and waters flowing west and north to Lake Ontario. A short gap separated the two watersheds. This strategic place was a center of commerce for Native Americans and later settlers. Fort Stanwix was an important battle site during the Revolution.
